RAWCS Project 13-2008–2009 – Myra Castellano-Hegarty
The Philippine Mission 2025 continues a meaningful humanitarian partnership between the Rotary Club of Blacktown City in Australia and the Rotary Club of Metro Bacolod in the Philippines.
For the past 17 years, this project has provided vital medical outreach and community support to underserved communities in Bacolod City and its surrounding areas, particularly among indigenous communities living in remote parts of the island.
The mission began with the vision of bringing accessible healthcare and humanitarian assistance to communities with limited medical services.
Since its inception, the project has been supported by dedicated Australian medical volunteers, Rotary members, and local partners who generously contribute their expertise, time, and resources. Through this collaborative effort, the mission has delivered free medical consultations, treatments, medicines, and community feeding programs to many families in need.
Over the years, the partnership between the two Rotary clubs has strengthened, enabling the mission to reach more remote communities and address urgent health and nutritional needs. The program not only provides immediate medical assistance but also promotes health awareness and strengthens the bond of international Rotary service.
One of the most memorable missions took place last year in Barangay Puey-an, an indigenous community located in a remote area outside Bacolod City. Reaching the community required determination and teamwork. Volunteers had to cross a flooded river and walk through muddy and difficult terrain to reach the village. Despite these challenges, the team remained committed to delivering much-needed services to the community.
Upon arrival, the volunteers conducted a medical outreach and feeding program for the residents. The medical team provided consultations and treatments to approximately 200 patients, addressing various health concerns and distributing necessary medications. In addition, a feeding program was organized that served 150 children, bringing nourishment and joy to the young members of the community.
This experience highlighted the resilience of the indigenous community and the dedication of the volunteers who made the mission possible. It also reflects Rotary’s guiding principle of “Service Above Self.”
As the Philippine Mission continues, the Rotary Club of Blacktown City and the Rotary Club of Metro Bacolod remain committed to sustaining this initiative and expanding its reach. With the continued support of volunteers, donors, and Rotary members, the mission will continue to bring hope, care, and meaningful assistance to communities in need.
